A Western Michigan resident, Katelin Mae Thomas received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a Minor in History of Art and Visual Culture Michigan State University in 2014. Although she explores many mediums and vehicles of expression, she fell in love with using her art to tell a story.
Influenced by the free standing marble sculptures of ancient Greek and Roman societies, she uses book pages to create sculptures from miniature to full scale sizes to inspire intimacy and awe in the presence of these characters. These sculptures range from mythical figures to fairy tale characters, all wrought with a delicate hand and an eye for minuscule details.
In her prints, fantasy meets the clinical hand of science. As a print maker, Thomas draws inspiration from scientific illustrations in the simplicity of line and composition. A colorful palette breathes life into fantastical vignettes that illustrate beautiful moments of symbiosis between a menagerie of creatures and futuristic civilizations.
With her art, Katelin aims to inspire stories in the people who experience her work, to get their minds spinning just as fast as hers does when she creates these characters and scenes.
